Spindlehowe Park & Pavilion – Summary

Spindlehowe Park in Viewpark features a grass pitch and an old pavilion that has fallen into disrepair after years of neglect and vandalism. Despite its decline, it remains a valuable community green space with strong potential for renewal. Moorlands FC is applying for a Community Asset Transfer from North Lanarkshire Council to take over the site and deliver long‑term stewardship. The club has committed to a £250,000 investment to fully restore and repurpose the pavilion and grounds.

Planned improvements include:

  • Full renovation of the pavilion, inside and out

  • New changing rooms, showers, and toilet facilities

  • Repair and protection of the playing surface, including measures to prevent vehicle damage

  • Creation of a safe, well‑managed, community‑focused park environment

Transferring management to Moorlands would secure the park for community use, reverse years of decline, reduce antisocial behaviour, and create a safe, inclusive space for sport and recreation. This proposal aims to transform Spindlehowe Park into a thriving, sustainable community asset for future generations.

Current Condition of the Pavilion

The pavilion at Spindlehowe Park is abandoned, heavily deteriorated, and now a focal point for antisocial behaviour, including vandalism, graffiti, loitering, and regular fly‑tipping. Its neglected state creates an unsafe, unwelcoming environment and undermines the park’s appeal, discouraging positive community use and contributing to a wider sense of decline.

If the Community Asset Transfer is approved, Moorlands will invest in transforming the building into a modern sports pavilion with changing facilities and a vibrant community hub, restoring safety, pride, and the matchday experience.

Proposed Pavilion Development

Moorlands FC plans to transform the abandoned pavilion into a fully refurbished Community Hub and modern Sports Pavilion, complete with changing rooms, showers, and accessible toilets. The renewed space will support grassroots football, community events, and wellbeing programmes, offering a safe, inclusive environment for all ages. This investment will turn a neglected building into a vibrant shared space that strengthens pride, participation, and connection across the Viewpark community.

Current Condition of the Playing Field

Spindlehowe Park’s playing field has been severely damaged by persistent vandalism, with vehicles repeatedly driven across the pitch, leaving deep ruts, torn turf, and unsafe surfaces. Poor drainage has added to the deterioration, causing regular waterlogging and limiting year‑round use. An exposed manhole near the pitch also poses a serious safety risk, especially in low‑light conditions. The wider site shows clear neglect, including graffiti, fly‑tipping, and abandoned burnt‑out vehicles, creating an unwelcoming environment and reducing community use. Despite this decline, the park still holds strong potential for regeneration with the right investment and local support.

Proposed Playing Field Development

If the Community Asset Transfer is approved, Moorlands FC will upgrade Spindlehowe Playing Fields with improved pitch maintenance and drainage, new goalposts, secure perimeter fencing, and new multi‑purpose training areas. The revitalised facility will offer a safe, accessible space for all ages, supporting sport, wellbeing, and community pride. By restoring purpose and regular use to the site, the redevelopment will also help deter antisocial behaviour and re‑establish the park as a valued community asset.
